Re “Student Loans Start to Bypass 2-Year Colleges” (front page, June 2):

Students now have fewer resources available to pay tuition. Big banks have turned their backs by pulling federal loans from two-year colleges, leaving working families scrambling for a new route to fulfill higher education hopes.

Fortunately, student loans are not the only way for middle-class families to afford college. Federal grant aid is a small investment that can help talented students afford higher education and graduate with the skills needed to strengthen the global economy.

It’s time for Congress to stop stalling and renew the Higher Education Act. This comprehensive legislation guiding higher education could make grants more accessible and alleviate the problems caused by big businesses concerned more with the future of their companies than the future of our country.
